Periodontal Disease
Is an infection of the teeth gums and the bone that surrounds the teeth it’s caused by specific bacteria that lives in the deepening space between the tooth and the gum that’s called a pocket, the bacteria that causes periodontal disease trigger the body’s immune system to produce enzymes and are this enzymes that actually cause the bone to be lost. If left untreated, this distraction of supported bone eventually leads to tooth loss.
Periodontal Disease is the #1 cause of adult tooth loss.
The traditional treatment for periodontal disease has always included a series of steps, starting with the removal of plaque and tarter from the root surfaces, this is called root planning and after healing the areas they are reevaluated, home care techniques are modified in severe cases surgery is recommended.
